Wheel Safe Project 2007
ProWorks, Inc. and the West Central Traumatic Brain Injury Advocacy Group have sought contributions, from area service organizations, to support the Wheel Safe Project for 2007, this project provides bicycle safety training and safety helmets to Litchfield’s second graders; this year
St. Philips has 18 second graders and Ripley Elementary has 125. The following organizations are supporting this year's project: American Legion Nelsan-Horton Post #104, American Legion Auxiliary, Eagles Aerie 3424, Kiwanis Club of LFD, LFD Lions Club, LFD Lioness Club, Rotary Club of LFD and VFW Admiral Benson Post 2818 Ladies Auxiliary.
The Wheel Safe Project began in 2000; at the completion of this year’s project, we will have given out about 1200 helmets. I would like to think that children are using the directional hand signals, and I would like to believe that all of the helmets are being worn, but I know that this is not true, but if even one of those helmets has protected a child’s head, and prevented a traumatic brain injury, then this program is a success.
The Wheel Safe Project will be carried out in May. If other organizations, businesses or individuals are interested in supporting this community project through a financial contribution and/or involvement in the Wheel Safe Project, please contact Dale Miller at 320 593-6257 or dmiller@hutchtel.net your support is appreciated.

Wheel
Safe Project 2006...
The
following organizations have provided financial support for this
worthwhile community project: American Legion Post,
Eagles,
Kiwanis Club of LFD, LFD Lions Club, LFD Lioness Club,
Rotary
Club of LFD, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Veterans of Foreign Wars
Ladies Auxiliary.
The
2006 Wheel Safe Project was held on May 16th at St. Philips School
and May 22nd at Ripley Elementary; this year's program provided
bicycle safety training and safety helmets to 14 second graders
at St. Philips School and 134 second graders at Ripley Elementary.
Meeker County Public Health will raffle some extra helmets at the
Meeker County Fair in August. It is our hope that this program
will help children enjoy safe summer bike riding during this summer
and many more.
The
Wheel Safe Project for 2004
provided bicycle safety helmets to nearly 150 second graders
at Ripley Elementary and St. Philips Schools; this program,
now in it’s fifth year, is carried out by Patty Benson,
representing the West Central Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Advocacy Group and Meeker County Social Services, and Dale
Miller, representing ProWorks, Inc.; this year’s program
was sponsored by American Legion Post #104, Eagles Club,
Kiwanis Club of LFD, LFD Jaycees, LFD Lions Club, LFD Lioness
Club, Meeker Cooperative (Operation Round Up) and Thrivent
Financial Services– $1320 was given to support this
project. In the past five years, nearly 750 helmets have
been given out, and if just one helmet prevents a traumatic
brain injury, then the program is a huge success.

The
following letters were received from Mrs. Lendt’s class
at Ripley Elementary.
Dear
Patty Benson and Dale Miller,
Thank
you for the dragon green helmets. Now I always wear it. I
have learned a valuable lesson. I definitely don’t want
to have my head cracked open or have a head injury happen
to me. Thank you for showing us that movie. I take bike rides
often.

Dear
Dale Miller and Patty Benson,
Thank
you for teaching me about bicycle safety. I don’t want
to end up like the people in the movie you showed us. I know
how important my head is to my body. I promise to wear my
helmet every time I ride my bike. I’ll tell my brother
and friends and family about what can happen when you don’t
have a helmet on, and thank you for the helmets.
